COLOURFIELDS
Influenced by her collaboration with Resene Paints' Mike Clowes, Wendy has pushed the boundaries of her craft, exploring a diverse array of pigments and incorporating cutting-edge industrial materials into her studio work.
In the past she had access to Resene’s experimental paint and base materials, Wendy has expanded her artistic horizons, seamlessly integrating innovative industrial products into her studio practice. Her Chroma exhibition marked a new chapter in Wendy’s exploration of pigment, introducing a diverse array of textures and finishes on unconventional sculptural supports.
Chroma is presented in three distinct movements:
Colourfield Drifts strips away formal constraints to focus solely on the interplay of intense, dreamy hues. Through the use of clear acrylic sheets, Wendy manipulates light to deepen the richness of colour, inviting viewers into a mesmerising visual journey.
Liquid Glass Resin Works showcases Wendy's recent practice, where fluid accidents guide the composition, augmented by a dynamic painting table that enhances the spontaneity of colour application.
X and O presents tightly constructed forms coated with lustrous tones, serving as a heartfelt homage to destinations that have deeply influenced Wendy's passion for colour.
Colourfield Drifts
Colourfield Drifts invites viewers on a vibrant odyssey through the realms of color, pigment, and materials, reflecting the artist's profound artistic evolution. Within this immersive encounter, Colourfields come alive, weaving together light, color, and landscapes in a captivating ballet. Suspended delicately, the perspex forms appear to float, capturing reflections from their surroundings.
Each artwork measures 1220 x 1800mm, yet with the aid of lighting, they expand into expansive 4 to 5-meter displays on the wall. These enlarged depictions faithfully reproduce every detail of the original, revealing hidden marks unseen to the naked eye upon close examination. Viewers are enticed to delve into the mystery of where reality ends and reflection begins
Liquid Glass Resin
In Wendy's Liquid Glass Resin works, she breaks free from the constraints of conventional shapes, embracing a more instinctual approach to applying resin, paint, and pigment. These works serve as a testament to her evolving practice, characterized by a reliance on serendipitous fluidity to shape the composition.
At the heart of the gallery, Wendy has introduced a tool that enhances the deliberate unpredictability of her color application. This versatile table, typically found in her studio, acts as a dynamic platform, facilitating uninhibited paint pouring and allowing for changes in direction and motion to encourage the interplay of different elements within her works, enabling them to settle organically.
