Molly Morpeth Canaday Award 2022

Organized by Arts Whakatane in collaboration with Te Koputu a te whanga a Toi - Whakatane Library and Exhibition Centre, this annual non-acquisitive award celebrates excellence in contemporary and traditional painting, drawing, and 3D art, alternating between genres each year.

Wendy Hannah was honored with the MMCA 2022 William Akel Award for her artwork titled "Maumahara - Memories," featuring a minimalist 'X' design incorporating kowhiti (cross-stitch) from tukutuku weaving as a cultural motif. The piece symbolizes the concept of 'home' and the lighthouse as a unifying beacon between water, land, and sky, while also evoking the profound connection to ancestors who have transitioned into stars in the night sky – known as Nga tupuna kua wheturangitia.
